WTH – What the ha-aair?!?

Having grown up in Dubai, the water you have access to is hard water and really, really bad for your hair. Unfortunately, it seems I took my bad water with me everywhere I went because I had the same issue in UK and in Bahrain :(!!! To add to my woes, I am one of those people who is anyway not blessed with good hair (why?! Indian genes, why???). I have really thin hair coupled with other hair issues (both hereditary and hormonal!). But for the last two years, I’ve seen my hair take a good beating and I know my friends have had the same issue. We’ve together tried and tested some different techniques to reduce our hair-fall, improve the texture and keep it more healthy. Here’s some of the tips we’ve tried and wanted to share it you all!

1. Scalp Oil Massage

Being Indian, we’ve grown up with a good old tel-maalish (head massage in hindi). Nothing really beats a good head massage from your grandmom or mom followed by a lovely afternoon siesta!. I think that’s the best way to keep your hair healthy and growing. It has numerous benefits, some of them are that it helps with blood circulation, hair growth, moisturizing the scalp and controlling frizziness! Coconut oil is one of the best oils you can use for your hair, almond oil and olive oil are other good oils too. Sometime’s you can even mix all 3 and make your own concoction along with some essential oils such as lavender or sandalwood.

I’m currently using the Japapatti hair oil from Forrest Essentials (check previous post!) and it’s actually been really good so far. I bought this particular oil to help with reducing my hair fall, thickening and regrowth, I’ve seen a considerable difference within just a few days of use. You can take 2-3 tbs or more of your preferred oil, depending on the length of your hair, heat it for about 15 seconds and with a cotton ball massage it on to your scalp. Leave it for about 15-20 mins but if you have some more time, leave it on for longer, really helps!

2. Hair Masks

With hair masks, there are so many different ones available in the market today. You can either make your own or use a regular product. Hair masks are usually thicker in texture and packed with moisture and nutrients for the hair. Try to use it once a week if you can, especially if you have dry or damaged hair, and if you have normal hair then at-least once a month. As a general thumb rule, its good to buy more products with more natural ingredients such a nut oils, etc and to also check that they are paraben and sulphate free. The hair mask I’ve been using for the last few years is the one from REDKEN, it is the ‘All Soft -heavy cream’. I use it more as a deep conditioning once a week. It really helps to bring in the moisture and keep my hair hydrated

3. Supplements

We all have really busy and hectic lifestyles and the added stress we go through doesn’t help. I’ve noticed that whenever I am really stressed out, I have a lot of hair fall which is really upsetting to someone like me who already has hair issues. A good go-to are taking supplements as this brings in the added nutrients we don’t get from our food. I’ve been told my many of my girlfriends to start taking Biotin, I bought a higher dose (10,000 mcg) this time because my hair was so weak and there was too much of hairfall. Once I’m done with this bottle, I’ll bring a lower dosage. Check with your pharmacist or doctor which is the best recommended dosage. Omega 3 is another supplement which greatly helps with your hair, skin and nails. I’ve noticed a huge difference and barely have any hairfall.

4. Treatment Oils

Who doesn’t love their hair to be smooth and lustrous hair? Treatment oils are perfect to keep the frizz at bay (screw you humidity!!), moisture locked in and protection when styling. I’ve seen so many great products in the market at different price points. Argan oil is the rage, I personally use Agadir Argan Oil Hair Treatment. This oil is light, non-greasy and it doesn’t make your hair fall flat. A little goes a long way. you just need a drop or two depending on the length of your hair. I have the travel size bottle, which is both perfect for travel and easier on the wallet. I’ve also used their ‘Hair Shield’ range, which is great to use for blowouts as it protects your hair when using heat. Moroccanoil is another really famous brand. I haven’t personally used it, other than their shampoo but it has really good reviews!

5. Shower Head Filters

This is a really good product to invest in if you live in an area which has hard water. As we know hard water is really not good for your skin and hair. Installing a shower-head filter is easy and helps purify the water which helps prevent having dry skin/hair. If you invest in this, you may not even need to buy too many of those extra products to maintain your hair/skin. I used to have one in Dubai but just make to sure to check how long it can used and to get it cleaned or replaced depending on time period!

Shower Head Filter

These are some of the few external things I do, to keep my hair healthy. It’s also really important to stay hydrated and eat well-balanced meals and not go too crazy on using a lot of heat on your hair!

We’re back and we missed you!

Hello, Helloo everyone!

Firstly, a Happy, happy 2018 to everyone! Guess who’s back?? Well duhhhhh, we are :)!!

We know it’s been a really, really long time since our last post. In-fact, we weren’t even sure if and when we would post again. There’s so much that has happened in the last 2.5 years, mostly personal commitments that had kept us away, BUT its safe to say that Divaly never really left us, and we never stopped talking about how we could have shared our hits and misses with everyone. We really missed celebrating our festival of fashion and more – we missed the writing, the talking and most of all getting to talk to all you guys. Well, before we get on to our usual kind of posts’, that we have at Divaly which is covering our love for fashion, beauty, food and fitness!

I wanted to give you a little update on what the both of us have been upto in the time that we were away. So starting with V, she has just been crushing it. I am so, so proud of her. In 2015, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She’s been a total superwoman, killing it at work, home, being a mommy and if all that wasn’t enough for her to conquer; she co-started Chic Cult – a venture where they sell luxury goods at great prices! (We’ll do a separate post where we will dish out all the deets). And as for moi (Aly), in 2016, I got to go and pursue one of my life-long dreams of going to business school – I went to study Strategic Marketing at Cranfield University in the UK. In 2015, however, my dad had gone through a bout of ill health, which is why between the both of us, we had to take some time off. But, do you know the coolest thing of all? V and I, got to be 15 mins away from each other. There was no way, we would have ever imagined, that my school would be a stone’s throw away from her (just to let you know, Cranfield is in the middle of nowhere!!!!) and I couldn’t be more lucky!

I am hoping that our readers are still around and we are going to work to build that connection again. I know when we had started out, we were called the Divaly girls and had so many messages asking us why we weren’t continuing. We’re sorry we were away for so long and we are so glad to be back!

Here’s a little photo of V and I when she took me around London city….

V and I being silly!

And for those new readers, here’s the link on who we are and how we started!

Thank you for reading and we hope to hear from you all :)!

Lots of love,

Aly and V

Neutral in Tone

Tee/Teestu – as I fondly call her, go way back. She is an old friend and classmate. We both moved to Pune, India for college, where we first met. If there was one word to describe Teesta, it would have to be fashionable. I have always loved her quirky, experimental yet elegant style.

Teesta likes to describe herself as a third culture kid. She was brought up in Oman and has spent time between India and London. She is currently based in Dubai and  works as a PR and Comms Consultant.

We are excited to have her share her opinion on style!! Read on for more…

When asked by an old friend, fellow fashionista and founder of Divaly what determined my fashion choices, not only was I excited to share my thoughts on my haute couture choices (wow: I was being asked which means I probably don’t dress too shabbily), it made me take a step back and think about what did actually affect my decision to try and not look like a slob every day? And the answer is really simple – my mother.

Teestas Mum
Teesta’s fashion icon, her Mum.

Back in 1958, my mother was born into a typical middle class, slightly unconventional Indian house hold where her parents defined the style and fashion choices of the bygone days. When I look back at Mum’s pictures, I am yet to find one where she doesn’t look chic, sexy, on point, fleek (yes, I went there) but always elegant. I started to wonder what was the elegance attributed to?

White on white on white. Black and white. Navy blue and white. Beige and white. In my opinion you can never go wrong with white. When in doubt for a casual look to sport, a simple white T, a fitted pair of jeans and heels or flats (depending what’s the occasion) can’t be amiss. I have perhaps stated the obvious but we seem to underestimate the power of the neutrals (the wanderer in me prefers to use the words “earth tones” puh-lease) – the main colors of this group include black, white, gray, brown and beige. I’m talking very Muji.

Teestas Gmum
Teesta in a simple, white striped t-shirt, with her grandmum.

High-waisted jeans, maxi dresses, crop tops, co-ords sets, peplum tops, bodycon, dungarees (oh lord, here we go again), every time I follow the latest fashion inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest there is a new look in town. Very much like a painting, using the neutral palette, irrespective of what the ‘style’ is, one can enhance ones best assets – skin, eye, body (hide, enhance, whatever be your personal choice).

It’s really simple – when in doubt, go back to the basics, and stay neutral. The one thing that is clear as Yves Saint Laurent and Hepburn summed it up in a punchier line that I can – be it summer, winter, spring or autumn, one look that is here to stay: elegance.

Teesta and her mum Rupa, looking elegant in traditional Indian.

Divaly Recommends!

Everyone is on holiday, or at least is still in the holiday mood. And you know what means? A relaxed calm mind, indulging in whatever makes you happy, for us that’s food, pampering and how can we forget SHOPPING!!! This month, we wanted to share some of the cool things we’ve found and would love for you to try!

1. Highliner Gel Eye Crayon – Marc Jacobs
This has been one of my newest finds and I absolutely love this!!! I’ve been using my Maybelline pencil for the longest time and wanted to try something new. I came across this eye-pencil at Sephora. I’ve never used the Marc Jacobs beauty line before, other than for shoes. It’s really soft and easy to glide on. It doesn’t make my eye water and it stays on for quite long. I first bought the black, which is dark and pigmented and olive as it looks great with my brown eyes (it also stands out with hazel and green eyes). I now have the sapphire blue and silver, which I’m yet to use but they looked lovely! Girls, I really think you should give this a try, perfect for your smoky eyes!

2. Pure Melt Cleansing Gel – Clarins
This is a pretty cool cleanser. It starts out as a gel that clings on to impurities and make-up, it then melts into a cleansing oil with the skin’s body heat. Only once you splash your face with water it turns into a gentle cleansing milk. Please remember you need to use this on dry skin, I made the mistake once of using it in the shower and it turned into the cleansing milk. This is really great for travel as it serves as a multi-purpose product. This product is suitable for all skin types and leaves your skin deeply cleansed, soft and soothed!

3. Hangover Primer – Too Faced
This is like a refreshing cool drink but for your face! Whether its long work days at work or late nights. This primer is your cure, it hydrates, smoothens and brightens your skin for a healthy finish. It is also really light and comes in a tube with a pump which is again great to carry on for travel.

We hope you enjoyed our new finds and tell us your favourites this summer!

Divaly Recommends – Summer Must Haves!

Summer’s here with a bang and it’s leaving us feeling hot hot hot!!! Since we’re girls on the go, Vasudha and I always believe in one thing – which is being prepared!! So we’re going to share some of our summer must haves, which are great to carry with you!
1. Clarins – UV Plus HP SPF40 Day Screen
The most important product you need to have with you this summer *drumroll please* is SUNSCREEN!!! I cannot tell you how important it is. I have tried many different brands and this by far is the best that I’ve come across – it’s light, not oily, gives you a matte and natural finish. A little goes a long way, just a drop or two with your moisturizer and then your regular make-up routine. I especially love that It doesn’t have a cakey white layer that some sunscreens have. You don’t need to necessarily buy Clarins, find a brand that works for you and your skintone but never ever leave the house without sunscreen. Depending on where you live and how much you will be in the sun, use anywhere from SPF 15 – 50 but don’t forget to include this! It will save you from pigmentation, spotting and damaging your skin!
2. Boots – Cucumber Cleansing Wipes
Another staple product that’s always with me, if you’re out in the sun a lot and feel like you need to cleanse up, these definitely work for me and are light on the skin.  These cool cucumber wipes refresh me everytime. They are also a cheap, gentle yet effective way to remove your make up. These are great to keep in your bag and perfect for travel.

3. Fa Eau De Cologne Body Splash
Most of us remember using Fa deodorant while growing up. I used to love the Caribbean Lime and Aqua. They have now come up with a body splash, which is perfect for some respite in this heat!! They come in different scents – these are especially great after a shower to freshen up or to keep in your bag for a little freshening up!
4. Sephora – Express Deodorant Wipes
Don’t you always hate to carry a bulky deodorant or roll on bottle in your bag? It takes SO much space and can sometimes be a mess! I’ve found an awesome alternative  – deodorant wipes! These are perfect to slip into your bag. Ideal for cleaning and refreshing and ensures that sweat doesn’t spoil your day!!
Do try these products and let us know what you think. What products would you recommend we try out?  Stay tuned for our travel favourites :)!
As always, happy shopping girls !!

Divaly Recommends!

Today we’re celebrating International Women’s Day, what better way to celebrate than to have some really awesome products to make you feel fab!

Over the past few months, we’ve been told and requested by most of our readers to post more product reviews of the products we use and experiment with. Taking that into consideration, we decided to also include a ‘Divaly recommends’  post once a month along with our monthly indulgences post!! This way we have more variety and choice to choose from :-)!

V and I will recommend absolutely anything – from a product,  to a service or something as random as a great place for cupcakes and macaroons, anything we think you must and absolutely need to try out !!!

So for this months post, we recommend :

1. Kerastase Elixir K ultime

This is an absolute must have for all you ladies. It is a lightweight multi-use oil that helps to nourish, soften and make your hair silky smooth! It can be used for all hair types and can be used in a variety of ways. You just need a small drop or two to use either as a pre-treatment oil before your shower, on damp hair as a style aid , after a blow dry for some shine or just on its own on dry hair. It also helps keep away the frizz and makes your hair super soft. It is slightly expensive but goes a really long away and worth every penny!Kerastase-Elixir-Ultime-Haaroel-125-ml

2. Instant Nail Polish Remover by Sephora

This is another absolute must have especially if you love to do your nails! It is a nail polish remover in a bottle with pre-moistened pleated foam which eliminates the need for cotton balls. Its convenient size is perfect for on the go and even for travel and doesn’t require any cotton pads. It takes off colour instantly without leaving any traces of nail polish and lasts you for ages. For even the most dark or hard to remove nail polish, this remover helps to take off lacquers. Get ready to say goodbye to bottles of nail polish remover and bags of cotton pads!

3. Midnight Recovery Concentrate

There are a few products that are miraculous and one wonders how you ever lived without them – Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil is undoubtedly one of them. Yes, you read that right, it’s an oil and it works spectacularly well on all skin tones in all climates. A couple of drops (I use 3 in winter when my skin gets extra dry) warmed up in your palms and massaged onto your face before you head to bed makes you wake up with a glow on your face – even if you have only slept for 3 hours! If you feel a spot coming on, put a drop of this oil on it directly and we promise you, not only will the spot disappear, it most definitely won’t leave a mark that takes ages to go away. Midnight recovery oil is one of those products that just works. You absolutely need to have it on your night stand. One bottle goes a long long way, so it is worth every penny. If you want results, buy this and don’t go in for a drug store substitute. You can use this oil on its own or put on some extra moisturiser if your skin gets really dry and flaky. And yes, this product is good to use all over your face – there is no need to avoid the T zone or anything of that sort.

We hope you try these products and love them as much as we do. Let us know once you do! Happy shopping as always and hope you have a fabulous week ahead!

I’m Fruitilicious!!

The New Year is here and I’m pretty sure we’ve all made our resolutions, broken them, planning to re-start them. We started off the year with a brilliant way to detox – a juice cleanse. If you’ve already tried that or were unable to start it yet, a good way to get into it is through fruit infused water.

As with anyone trying to lose weight or detox, we’ve all had our various “remedies” to get started…… right from having honey with lemon or cinnamon, hot water with lemon (which has never worked for me because I just cannot get myself to get out of bed *sigh*)

Fruit infused water/Detox water has great benefits, right from helping you flush out toxins, slimming down your belly, helping reduce bloating, clearing up skin, etc the list goes on but most importantly it is nutritious and helps you increase your intake of water and is delicious too!!

I had got introduced to this a few years ago and have been doing it as regularly as I can. I take it to work too and is easy to carry around!

I’m going to share some of my favourites, you can mix and add as to your preference and even try out your own combinations! All you really need is a bottle and the ingredients to get started.

I usually use a 1.2 or 1.5 litre bottle with chilled water or ice cubes and keep it for a few hours to really get the nutrients out. You can even make it the previous night and have it ready for the next morning. You can refill the bottle 1-2 times when it still has the fruit.

1. Lemon,Mint, Orange and Cucumber (My favourite!!)
1/2 a cucumber, sliced
1/2 an orange, sliced
1/2 a lemon, sliced (I suggest start with a little less if you find it too sour)
10-12 mint leaves
Ice (if required)
Note: You can either make a combination of just lemon+mint, Lemon, mint +orange or lemon, mint + cucumber

Lemon,Mint, Orange and Cucumber (homemade)
2. Lemon, Strawberry, Apple, Cinnamon and Mint
1/2 small lemon, sliced
1 strawberry, sliced
1/4 red apple, sliced
4-5 mint leaves
1/2 tsp cinnamon or a small cinnamon stick
Ice (if required)
Note: You can also have with just apple (1 piece, any apple you like) and cinnamon (1 stick)
3. Strawberry, Cucumber and Grapefruit
1 strawberry, sliced
1/2 cucumber, sliced
1/4 grapefruit, sliced (cut into half or quarters)
Ice(if required)
4. Watermelon and Mint
1 cup cut watermelon
10-15 mint leaves
5. Strawberry, Lemon and Basil
1/2 cup strawberries, sliced
1/2 a lemon, sliced
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
We hope you enjoy these recipes and do tell us which combinations you liked the most. Happy Detoxing!!

Happy 2015!!

As 2015 just begins, Vasudha and I would like to wish all our readers a Happy New Year and hope this year brings you lots of happiness, good health, success and mostly makes all your shopping wish lists come true : -)!!

As we both look back on the last few months since Divaly came into being, it has been an interesting and exciting journey and we are very so grateful for the support from all our friends and family and mostly all our readers from all around!

This year we have planned a few different surprises and posts that we will be sharing with you over the next few weeks! We would as always love to hear your feedback and please let us know if there is anything you would like us to cover for 2015.

Cheers to a wonderful 2015 and stay tuned for more!

Have you sometimes had trouble finding the right belt? the right size? the right finish? or maybe a belt just too bland for your taste?

Well looks like that problem has been solved here for all the folks in sunny Dubai!!

A new luxury concept store has opened a few weeks ago at the Mercato Mall, Dubai.

Divaly was invited to the store launch and check out this unique concept. To be honest initially I was unable to go due to prior commitments but thanks to the wonderful Michelle who accommodated me at another time.

First a little background info on the brand,

Buckles and belts Buckles and belts.jpg1

B&B Buckles&Belts is a unique luxury concept store from Switzerland which opens its doors in Dubai for the first time and gives customers over 170 buckles and 80 belts to create ‘Your Style. Your Belt’.  With the current range on display,  these can be combined with over 5,000 possible combinations. They source the best Italian quality with unique buckles that personify natural elegance and fresh glamour and an exquisite array of fashionable pure leather belts for men and women.

Buckles&Belts at Mercato Mall.

You can select from special, classic, dress, suit, handmade and exclusive buckles and belts for every occasion and enables them to see their ‘made-to-measure’ creation unfold before their eyes when skilful staff craft the belt in-store.

Buckes&Belts Group shot 1

The double fastening system, an exclusive invention by them makes is possible to provide fitted belts with excellent finish and also to interchange the buckles. Customers can buy different buckles from B&B Buckles&Belts for the same belt and lets them stay trendy.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I first visited but I think its a great concept and can do really really well here in Dubai. Practically most people that I know are always on the lookout for the right belt to suit their requirements. I believe B&B Buckles&Belts will take care of that.  They have some great pieces of leather and in many different colours.  It’s perfect because you can choose it just the way you like it and size it accordingly to suit you as well. Being on the plus side, I really think it gives us a lot more options both for men and women. Whether you want to go classic, glamorous or even slightly adventurous say with a crocodile buckle? They have it all.

They have really friendly, helpful staff and I would highly recommend anyone and everyone to check out the store. Gift vouchers are also available, should you want to gift someone.

Now for the exciting part *drumroollll please*, they have given us two little goody bags with a usb, a limited edition leather key-chain and a voucher for Aed 150 off on any purchase!! How’s that for a giveaway??? 😀

All you need to do is answer the following question either on our blog post or our facebook page :

“How many combinations of belts and buckles can you make with the current range??”

Note : – This contest is only eligible for people living in Dubai, U.A.E. Please note the contest ends on Dec 30th, 2014.

Good luck and happy shopping!! : – )

Holiday Beauty For Every Budget – P2

Yesterday our post focused on the basics, getting our skin glowing, the perfect primer and foundation for that flawless holiday beauty look. In continuation to our previous post, our guest blogger Zarine focuses on the cosmetic aspect, to get the perfect products to use to suit every pocket!

Over to you Zarine :

I am a bronzer fiend. Since I have a rounder face, I find sculpting the heck out of my non-existent cheekbones, intensely satisfying. Highlighter is my other love and I have to resist the urge not to smear it all over my face (..but fine-milled glitter is just so pretty!). When used subtly, highlighter and shimmer can make your skin look like you are being followed around by a professional lighting crew.

Wallet friendly favourites include Maybelline Master glaze blush sticks ($9.99, Walmart), for a creamy finish; E.L.F. Pressed Mineral Blush and Baked Bronzer ($5.00 each, ELF Cosmetics) and Rimmel London Sun Shimmer Bronzing Wheel ($9.99, Murale), for a sun-kissed glow. Splurge worthy options include Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush($30.00, Sephora), which lasts up to 12 hours and are extremely pigmented, Benefit’s Benetint ($34.00, for a subtle wash of rosy colour and my favorite, Too Faced’s The Bronzed and the Beautiful Bronzer Pallette ($39.00, Sephora). For a champagne shimmer, Josie Maran’s Argan Oil Illuminizer ($32.00, Sephora), gives you that lit-from-within look. For a pearly finish, try Benefit’s High Beam ($30.00, Sephora).

TipMix these with your foundation for a J-Lo glow.

Nothing is hotter this season than a plum lip. Your lips need to be mistletoe-ready, so exfoliate them using the ELF Lip Exfoliator Stick ($2.99, ELF Cosmetics) or Bliss’ Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub ($20.00 Sephora).

Lipsticks like NYX Matte Lipstick in Perfect Red ($5.99, Walmart) and Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Plum Velour ($8.99, Walmart) are sure to keep your wallet happy, while lavish formulas like Diorific Golden Shock Lipstick  ($45.00, Sephora), NARS Greta Audacious Lipstick ($36.00, and MAC’s Lorde Collection lipsticks in Pure Heroine ($26.00, MAC Cosmetics) will make your pout stand out. Add extra dimension with an opaque, non-budge gloss like OCC’s Lip Tar in Stalker ($22.00, Sephora) or add dramatic plump-factor with Soap and Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker lip plumping gloss ($20.00, Sephora).

When you are taking a break from rocking a fierce lip, keep your kissers moisturized by using a tinted balm like Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment ($25.00, Sephora), Maybelline’s Baby Lips ($3.99, and EOS lip balms ($3.99, Shoppers Drug Mart).

GLITTER, GLITTER EVERYWHERE! Channel your inner 70’s maven! The Sonia Kashuk Eye shadow Quad Pallet in Showstoppers ($13.99, is a budget-friendly, glittery and portable option. Or change it up with flattering purple shades; try the ELF Baked Eyeshadow Trio in Lavender Love ($4.00, ELF Cosmetics). For amazing colour payoff in a variety of shades and textures try the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette ($61.00, Sephora) and the Stila In the Light palette ($44.00, Sephora). Need an extra charge of glittery goodness? Add a dusting of MAC’s glitter Heirloom Mix ($24.00, MAC Cosmetics) over your eye shadow.  Bam!

Rim your waterline with Rimmel’s Soft Khol Eyeliner ($11.99, or try blogger favorite,  Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes ($19.00, Sephora). Line your upper lash line with Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner ($23.00, Sephora) or try the NYX Curve Eyeliner ($15.00, Ulta)—it’s ergonomic shape makes lining your eyes mistake proof—even if you’ve had a little too much eggnog!

Finally, apply 2 generous coats of mascara; my favorites are Diorshow Extase Mascara ($30.00, Sephora), for a luxe, falsies look and Covergirl Lashblast Fusion ($12.00, Ulta), for a thick, clump free finish.
